Welcome to the fifth course in the ALiEMU CAPSULES series! In this course, we will be discussing the approach to safe and effective procedural sedation in the Emergency Department from a pharmacology perspective.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe patient-oriented goals and outcomes for an effective and safe procedural sedation in the emergency department.
  2. List the requirements and tools necessary for patient assessment and monitoring prior to, during, and after procedural sedation in the emergency department.
  3. Identify medications commonly used for procedural sedation in the emergency department.
  4. Compare and contrast the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties of common medications utilized for procedural sedation in the emergency department.
  5. Identify and treat adverse effects and complications associated with procedural sedation in the emergency department.
  6. Identify the most common drug-drug or disease-drug interactions that may occur during procedural sedation.
  7. Utilize case-based scenarios to design optimal medication regimens for procedural sedation in the emergency department.
